Vijaydurg

Said to be the oldest fort in Sindhudurg coast, Vijaydurg Fort is only one of the two forts of the Maratha kingdom where Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj personally hoisted the saffron flag, the other being Torna. Renowned as ‘Eastern Gibraltar’, the fort, surrounded by the Arabian Sea on three sides was impregnable. A 40 km shallow creek acted as a natural barrier to ships and protected the fort.
